Using a number that's already on WhatsApp

Yes, you can keep the number your customers already know. It takes 15 minutes and a short pause in WhatsApp service.
Before you start
- The phone that has WhatsApp on that number
- A quiet time of day (the number is offline for a few minutes)
Step by step
1Back up your chats
In the WhatsApp Business app go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup and tap Back up. Export any important chats by email if you want a copy outside WhatsApp.
Tip: Old chat history does not move to the API. Your customers' chats stay on their phones as normal.
2Delete the WhatsApp account on that number
Go to Settings > Account > Delete my account, enter the number and confirm. This only removes the app registration; the phone number itself is untouched. Uninstalling the app is not enough.
3Wait 3 minutes, then connect
Give WhatsApp a few minutes to release the number, then follow the connect your WhatsApp number guide and enter the same number. The code arrives by SMS or call as usual.
Tips that save time
- Want to keep using the app on that number too? Meta now allows this on some numbers (called coexistence). Tell us and we'll check if yours qualifies before you delete anything.
- Your profile photo, about text and catalogue don't carry over. Have your logo ready to upload again.
